I actually lost my footing and then after I started hearing crashes from things falling off the walls and shelves I dove under my desk and stayed there for the remainder of the earthquake. The building was shaking and swaying so hard I couldn't even see straight! There was a good 5-10 seconds where I was sure the building was going down. Especially because it was built to withstand magnitude 7.0 and this was so big it was potentially only .1 away from that!
We were evacuated for quite a few hours and the streets were crazy. So crowded you could barely move. There were quite a few large aftershocks, including one being a magnitude 6! Well, I certainly picked the "exciting" time to be in Wellington. Everyone from New Zealand I talk to says this is NOT normal and it's the strongest earthquakes they have ever felt, let alone the MOST they have ever felt! Well, certainly a shakey start to my birthday weekend!
My flatmate's broken mirror that fell off the wall
Broken windows
There is also apparently a giant crack in the road somewhere, although I haven't seen it. Lot's of buildings have some damage, and some houses even collapsed.
